Blade Runner, a science fiction film based on Philip K Dick's novel Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep? Is a film based upon a post apocalyptic Los Angeles in the year 2019 and some of the imagery in the film is still seen in films that are made today and has also influenced many video games.
Built up by a team of innovative designers and filmmakers that included the likes of director Ridley Scott, Concept artist Syd Mead and Effects specialist Douglas Trumbull, this film was built around a parallel universe that consisted of replicants, cyberpunks, flying cars and a decaying, futuristic city.
The Concept Art was created by one of the most innovative artists, Syd Mead who has worked on some of the most creative science fiction films to date such as torn and elysium. Syd really pathed the way for other concept artists and film makers with making a very distinctive but original concept art for blade runner, Tech Noir and Cyberpunk were in high spirits and were really expressed in films and video games through out the 80's and this film is one of the focal points of these two hybrid genres.
Tech noir - This a hybrid fiction genre particularly found in film. This is the combination of film noir and science fiction example of this would be; The Terminator, Alien and Blade Runner.
Cyberpunk - This is a sub-genre of science fiction in which there is a big feeling of helplessness, loss or mortality. Corporations run the majority of the nation and everybody sticks to the status quo. An oppressive society dominated by computer technology.
With looking at so much concept art we were told to meet in Manchester and to take some pictures of landscapes that could and go with the theme of blade runner. We took many pictures from angles and from different view points, we seemed to get most success when we went to china town, and too pictures in alley ways, that had metal stairs attached to the sides of buildings, steam coming out of vents and bright lights, a lot of these things went perfectly with the theme of blade runner.
Here are some of the picture taken on the day -
The first picture is one from china town, it gives a long perspective view, and it has many of the things that are in blade runner such as signs and lanterns. The only this that would make this better is if we could of been there at night.
The second image is of an arch way in china town, I liked how it felt very oriental and vintage. The low angle also made it feel huge, something that we saw a lot with structures in Blade Runner
The third image is of vents and fans i think this was good it adds texture and can break up an image or compilation of images also I think it goes well as we see huge buildings with items and things climbing them such as vents and tubes.
This picture was similar to the last
it goes great with the theme of the movie
and I think it could be used well for my
game cover although if it was shot at
night it could have given it more
personality.
We also took some great pictures inside the print works and it had some good features such as neon lights, dark lighting and pipes and vents.
Here are some images taken at the Printworks -
This one is from the print works and
I like the the rusting fan and the pipes
its something when taking photos I
thought suited. It would have been
better without the lights but with
photoshop things like this
could be changed easily.
In this picture I like the supports and
I wanted to get a picture thats a
little differently.
I really like this picture although the neon
design isn't really fitting to the theme, I like that its dark as this was hard to find. Also i find the height works very well, it makes the neon seem very big.
This picture is a little bit blurry which isn't
good I like the way the light is reflective and the neon
I tried to take a lot of picture and i think although rushed this could be used in some ways.
This is one of my favourite pictures the bright light
shining into the lens of the camera, the glow from the neon on the wall and the neon its self give this picture a very warm atmosphere. Also i think the low angle compliments it as it makes everything seem big and adds perspective to the piece.
